Join Srini Varadhan to learn more about Orchids.
Orchids represent one of the largest and most diverse plant families on Earth, yet they are often
misunderstood as fragile or difficult to grow. This talk introduces orchids from a broad biological
perspective, exploring where they come from, how they live in the wild, and the remarkable strategies
they use to survive in diverse environments. The unique ecological roles orchids play across both
tropical and temperate regions will be highlighted, with special attention given to orchid–pollinator
relationships and the distinctive life cycles that set orchids apart from other flowering plants. The talk
also covers fundamental principles of orchid cultivation and offers practical guidance on basic
care—light, water, growing media, and common mistakes. In addition, the economic, cultural, and
horticultural significance of orchids will be discussed, along with current conservation challenges facing
many wild species. By connecting orchids in nature with orchids in cultivation, this talk offers insight into
one of the plant world’s most captivating families and builds confidence to approach orchids as
cultivated plants.
