My PowerPoint presentation will reveal a hidden world of microbes and small animals that
quietly and invisibly maintain the health and productivity of plants. Subterrainian partnerships
between plant roots and selected soil microbes are the foundation for all life on this planet (or
at least all lifeforms are more complex than single-cell organisms). I’ll show you these
microscopic root partners and explain why they are there and what they are doing for plants. It
turns out that healthy plants require healthy living soils – and plants use the power of
photosynthesis to build the soil ecosystem that they need. And in turn, we all benefit from the
world-building power that plants have. As gardeners, there are simple things that we can do to
help plants in their quest to build healthy living soils – we’ll talk about those things too. As
always, I leave time at the end of my presentations to ask questions.
