Snowy Owls – Visitors from the Arctic
Snowy owl populations are in serious decline enough that the International Union for the
Conservation of Nature has declared the species ‘vulnerable to extinction’. Each winter
southern Canada sees the arrival of migrant ‘snowies’ searching for food. And, for more than a
decade Paul Gains has spent thousands of hours observing, photographing and writing about
these visitors from the Arctic.
In this presentation he will share dozens of his favourite photographs and the stories behind
some of his extraordinary encounters.
Paul Gains has been a full-time freelance journalist for more than 30 years. In that time his
work has appeared in Time, the New York Times, Outside Magazine, Canadian Geographic, the
Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, The Narwhal and hundreds of other periodicals around the
world. He is a long-time resident of Cambridge, Ontario.
Please note this is a current 2027 member-only RSVP event as attendance numbers are
